Lilburn City Manager Jenny Simpkins announced today that Police Chief Bruce Hedley plans to retire after 12 years in the top position and 15 with the city.

His retirement is effective July 7, 2023. Hedley declined comment.

Then City Manager Bill Johnsa tapped Hedley for the position in April 2011 after the termination of former chief John Davison’s contract.

In the past, Lilburn had the privilege of having the native resident, who served as the town’s deputy chief while also holding the position of interim police chief.

During Hedley’s tenure, a remarkable reduction in crime rates was observed, and to this day, the city continues to enjoy a commendable level of safety. Hedley’s efforts in maintaining a secure community have garnered praise from both present and past city officials.
Over the course of the last ten years, statistics indicate a significant 48 percent decline in “Part 1 crimes,” encompassing acts like homicides, robberies, and burglaries.

The exceptional decline in criminal activities stands as a testament to Hedley’s exemplary leadership within the Lilburn Police Department, which comprises more than 30 sworn officers, according to City Manager Jenny Simpkins.

Simpkins highlighted Hedley’s ability to instill a community-centered approach among his officers, stating, “Hedley successfully encouraged his officers to prioritize engagement with the community. It is not uncommon to witness our officers engaging in conversations with citizens or participating in recreational activities with children at City Park. They have earned immense respect within the community, largely due to Hedley’s program. Lilburn is undeniably safe.”

Last year, Hedley’s dedication to community-oriented engagement earned him the esteemed Leadership Award from the Gwinnett County Chamber. Additionally, Hedley has previously served as the president of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.

LPD Capt. Chris Dusik, an 18-year veteran of the Lilburn Police Department with two years of experience at a Central Florida agency, will assume the role of Acting Police Chief.

The community will soon be informed about the appointment of an interim police chief. The City’s administration plans to initiate a search for a permanent candidate in the following weeks.
