Starting a magazine can be a complex and challenging process, but it can also be a very rewarding experience. I’ve been in the publishing industry for 23 years and I love magazines. My very first magazine was called Sister Inc. I wasn’t sure exactly what I was doing, but I did it anyway. Later I published a newspaper for women called Women In Business Today. It was the only newspaper of its’ kind just focused on women in business in the state of New Jersey.

Many people have said that the magazine industry is going to die, but I beg to differ. If you are thinking about starting a magazine, I would suggest that you think about the person who enjoy holding the magazine in their hands like I do, however you also have to think about that person who consumes all of their content on a mobile device.

Here Are 8 Steps To Consider When Starting A Magazine:

  1. Identify your target audience: Clearly define who you want to reach with your magazine. This will help you tailor your content and marketing efforts to your target readership.
  2. Develop a concept and editorial plan: Determine the focus of your magazine and create an editorial calendar outlining the topics you plan to cover.
  3. Create a business plan: A business plan will help you define your goals, target market, revenue streams, and expenses. It will also help you secure funding, if needed.
  4. Choose a name and design a logo: Select a catchy and memorable name for your magazine, and design a logo that reflects your brand identity.
  5. Determine your distribution strategy: Decide how you will get your magazine into the hands of your readers, whether through subscriptions, newsstand sales, or both.
  6. Secure funding: Depending on the scope of your magazine, you may need to secure funding to cover startup costs such as design, printing, and marketing.
  7. Assemble a team: You may need to hire staff or enlist the help of freelancers to create content, design layouts, and manage the business side of things.
  8. Launch and promote your magazine: Once you have everything in place, it’s time to launch your magazine and start promoting it to your target audience.
