Domonique Cooper, an education consultant with prior experience as a substitute teacher, has officially declared her intention to run for a seat on the Gwinnett County Board of Education in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Cooper made her candidacy announcement for the District 3 seat of the nonpartisan school board, which is currently held by Mary Kay Murphy. Her primary goal is to ensure that every child in the district receives a high-quality education and is provided with the best opportunities to succeed.

While the state has yet to release the full 2024 election cycle calendar, it’s anticipated that the primaries for local and state offices, including the general election primary, will take place in May as per previous years. Gwinnett was moved to nonpartisan school board elections in 2022, which are now required to coincide with the general election primary.

The school board Districts 1, 3, and 5 will be up for election in 2024. Cooper had already initiated her campaign for the District 3 seat by filing the necessary paperwork with the state. With 12 years of residency in Gwinnett County, and having successfully raised two children who graduated from Gwinnett County Public Schools, she has a vested interest in the district’s educational system, as she also has a third child currently attending fourth grade there.

In her campaign announcement, Cooper describes herself as a dedicated “community volunteer and advocate for education.” She has actively participated in the Gwinnett County Parent Teacher Association and held leadership positions within the organization at both the school and council levels. Additionally, she has been involved with various Local School Councils and served as a board member for nonprofit organizations focused on children’s welfare.

Cooper’s comprehensive platform centers on elevating academic achievement, enhancing school safety measures, and ensuring schools are responsive to the needs of families. She also emphasizes the importance of fostering parent engagement and providing robust support for GCPS staff to ensure a well-rounded education for all students.

With a profound understanding of the challenges faced by schools and a fervent passion for finding viable solutions, Cooper is confident in her ability to make a positive impact on the school board.
