FEMA

If you are a disaster survivor in Georgia who received a federal disaster assistance grant from FEMA after Tropical Storm Debby (Aug. 4 – 20, 2024) or Hurricane Helene, it’s crucial to use the funds only for disaster-related expenses.

FEMA provides a letter explaining how the money should be used, listing specific expenses covered by the grant. Remember, disaster grants are not for everyday living expenses. Be sure to keep receipts for at least three years, as FEMA may require repayment if funds are used improperly.

Covered expenses include:

  • Home repairs (e.g., structure, water, septic, and sewage systems)
  • Rental assistance (rent and/or deposit)
  • Repair or replacement of essential vehicles
  • Medical or dental care for uninsured disaster-related injuries
  • Repair of specialized work tools
  • Educational materials (e.g., computers, books)
  • Moving and storage expenses
  • Increased childcare costs

Review your FEMA determination letter carefully and ensure all required documents are included. It’s also essential to keep your contact information with FEMA up to date to avoid missing important updates on your assistance application or payment status.

If you have any questions, call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET. Help is available in multiple languages.
