City Government
Michael Coker is Mulberry’s first elected mayor. Under the city’s charter, Mulberry is governed by a five-member city council, with the council choosing one of its own members to serve as mayor.
Why Mulberry Was Created
Mulberry was created after a developer proposed hundreds of apartments within a roughly 26-square-mile area of northeastern Gwinnett County that had no multi-family housing. Voters approved the incorporation referendum with 57% support. Unlike a full-service city, Mulberry’s government controls only planning and zoning, code enforcement, and stormwater management — other services continue to be provided by Gwinnett County.
Size & Growth
At nearly 28 square miles and roughly 41,000 residents, Mulberry is Gwinnett’s largest city by land area and its second-largest by population. In its first year of operation the city issued more than 1,600 permits, reflecting the rapid growth pressure that led to its creation in the first place.
