Imagine planning a trip to the United States, only to reconsider because of the country’s current climate. Under President Trump’s administration, many feel that democracy is under threat, and the nation seems increasingly unwelcoming to visitors, students, and skilled workers from abroad.

Tourism is taking a hit as people worldwide choose not to support an America that appears to be embracing authoritarianism. For instance, numerous Europeans have canceled trips to popular destinations like Disney World and major music festivals. Travel from China has decreased by 11%, with tourists opting for countries like Australia and New Zealand instead. Even Canadians, who once made up the largest group of international visitors, are traveling elsewhere. There’s been a 23% drop in Canadians driving to the U.S. and a 13% decline in those flying.

But it’s not just tourists who are concerned. Foreign students and skilled workers on visas face real dangers. For example, Dr. Rasha Alawieh, a kidney transplant specialist, was deported despite having legal status and a court order allowing her to stay. Similarly, Columbia graduate student Mahmoud Khalil was arrested simply for protesting against certain policies. Now, universities are warning foreign students not to leave the U.S., fearing they might not be allowed back in.

Even more troubling, the Trump administration is deporting people even when courts block such actions. Hundreds of Venezuelans were recently sent to a prison in El Salvador despite a judge ruling against their deportation. Trump labeled them “bad people,” a term he often uses for those who oppose him.

If you value democracy, safety, and human rights, now might not be the best time to visit America. Whether you’re a tourist, a student, or a skilled worker, it’s worth reconsidering your plans. Staying away sends a message that the world is watching and won’t support authoritarian rule.Wikipedia
