Gwinnett County Shows Support for Veterans Through Operation Green Light
Gwinnett County is showing its appreciation for veterans this week through participation in Operation Green Light. Yesterday, District 3 Commissioner Jasper Watkins III presented a proclamation in support of the initiative, a program organized by the National Association of Counties (NACo).
Illuminating the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center
As part of Operation Greenlight, the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center will be illuminated in green lighting from November 6-12. This symbolic act is meant to let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported by our community. Residents are also encouraged to participate by displaying green lights in their home and business windows through November 12.
Veterans Day Ceremony
The weeklong event will culminate in Gwinnett’s Veterans Day Ceremony this Saturday, November 11 at 11:00am at the Fallen Heroes Memorial in Lawrenceville. This ceremony honors those who have sacrificed for our country and freedom.
Operation Green Light
Operation Green Light was started by NACo and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO). Over 3,000 counties across America participate to highlight the contributions of veterans and bring attention to the resources available to them.
The Commitment to Veteran Support and Outreach Act
NACo is urging Congress to pass the Commitment to Veteran Support and Outreach Act (H.R. 984/S.106). This bill would provide federal funding to expand County Veteran Service Officers (CVSOs). CVSOs are county employees accredited by the VA to assist veterans in accessing benefits and services. The legislation would allow competitive grants to be awarded to create and expand CVSO programs, focusing on areas with high veteran suicide rates and shortages of support.
Gwinnett County is proud to honor our local veterans through Operation Greenlight. We encourage residents to join us in displaying green lights as a symbol of our gratitude and support for our veterans.
