As Peachtree Corners continues to revitalize its downtown and grow mixed-use communities, city planners and developers are addressing a longstanding issue: where to put parking spaces.
Parking: The Overlooked Component of Development
Parking may not be the most glamorous part of economic development, often relegated to a side note in new project announcements. However, parking can present significant challenges for city leaders in Peachtree Corners, such as location, accessibility, affordability, safety, and environmental impact.
Reimagining Parking Solutions in Peachtree Corners
Innovative solutions are driving a new wave of thinking in Peachtree Corners. City leaders are considering how parking areas can be repurposed to promote a more community-friendly and sustainable environment. Emphasis is being placed on reducing space dedicated to parking and pivoting toward alternative mobility options like walking, biking, and transit.
The Rise of Autonomous Vehicles
While “smart parking” solutions involving fully autonomous vehicles (AV) are not yet widespread in Georgia, Peachtree Corners is at the forefront of testing AVs within its commercial districts. In September, Peachtree Corners made history by deploying Georgia’s first Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards-compliant, on-demand AV for public use. This AV currently serves a route through Technology Park and will see its route expanded in spring 2025.
A Forward-Thinking Approach
Peachtree Corners’ embrace of innovative parking and transit solutions highlights its commitment to balancing economic development with community needs and sustainable practices. This proactive approach sets the city apart as a leader in integrating technology and mobility into urban planning.
