Nurses Sound the Alarm: 96% Have Considered Quitting as Burnout Surges Across the Nation

A new nationwide survey from MyPerfectResume has revealed a troubling trend in America’s healthcare system: nearly every nurse has considered quitting. The survey of 876 U.S. nurses found 96% have thought about leaving the profession, and 83% feel burned out at least weekly, with more than one-third reporting burnout every shift.

Despite these alarming stats, 94% say they’d still choose nursing again, underscoring their passion and dedication—yet also highlighting how systemic failures are eroding the foundation of one of the country’s most vital professions.

❤️ Nurses Love Their Work—But Feel Let Down by the System

Even amid the exhaustion, nurses continue to show deep loyalty to their profession:

  • 94% would still choose nursing
  • 97% report overall career satisfaction
  • 52% say they are “very satisfied” with their careers

But this loyalty masks deeper pain: 57% frequently consider leaving, not because they’ve lost their calling—but because they’re losing support.

🔥 Burnout Is the New Normal in Nursing

Burnout isn’t a rare occurrence—it’s become part of the job:

  • 36% of nurses say they feel burned out every shift
  • 47% experience burnout multiple times per week
  • 63% say employers attempt to address burnout, but one-third say those efforts don’t help

Top causes of burnout:

  • 37% – Lack of mental health support
  • 36% – Unsafe or stressful working conditions
  • 34% – Mandatory overtime and long shifts

“Nurses love what they do—but they are drowning under the pressure,” says Jasmine Escalera, career expert at MyPerfectResume. “We need to stop applauding their resilience and start removing the burdens that demand it.”

📉 Overworked, Understaffed, and Over It

Nurses Are Tired

The staffing situation continues to deteriorate:

  • 56% say understaffing is worse now than in previous years
  • 44% report increased reliance on temp or travel nurses
  • 48% say patient care quality suffers as a result

💸 Nurses Working Off the Clock—and On the Side

The burnout crisis is matched by an economic one. Nurses are not only stretched thin, but often work unpaid hours and juggle multiple jobs:

  • 59% work 41–45 hours per week
  • 47% put in 5–10 unpaid hours weekly
  • 92% work side gigs to supplement their income
  • 18% pay out-of-pocket for work-related supplies monthly

🚪 Why Nurses Are Ready to Walk Away

The reasons nurses cite for potentially leaving are not emotional—but structural:

  • 30% – Excessive workload
  • 28% – Limited advancement
  • 23% – Chronic emotional strain
  • 56% say they’d go back to school to change careers

🛠 3 Strategies to Fight Nurse Burnout

To help combat the crisis, MyPerfectResume offers three key strategies for nurses:

  1. Prioritize Self-Care & Set Boundaries
Nurses must reclaim time for themselves through rest, nutrition, and mental health support.
  2. Build a Support Network
Stress thrives in isolation. A strong system of peers, managers, and professionals can help nurses cope.
  3. Vet Future Employers for Culture Fit
Nurses should ask questions about workplace culture, support systems, and mental health policies before accepting new roles.

📊 Survey Methodology

Survey conducted March 6, 2025, via MTurk with 876 U.S. nurses. Questions ranged from multiple-choice to scale-based assessments of satisfaction, workload, burnout, and compensation.
