First Day Of School
6-Year Old Carter Goes To The First Grade Today

Your morning just got louder, busier, and a little more exciting.

You probably heard it this morning—the deep hum of school buses rolling through neighborhoods, the squeals of excited kids, and maybe even the groan of a parent stuck in traffic behind flashing red lights. That can only mean one thing: school is back in session across Gwinnett County!

With over 180,000 students returning to classrooms, driveways turned into photo studios this morning, backpacks were packed (and in some cases forgotten), and yes—there were a few last-minute sprints to the bus stop.

And right at the center of all the excitement?
Carter.
A 6-year-old first grader, glowing with confidence in her pink skirt, matching socks, chunky white-and-pink sneakers, and a sparkly bracelet stack. Her neatly styled braids were topped off with white bows, and her lavender-and-pink backpack looked almost as ready as she was.

Meet Carter: First Grade Superstar

This morning, Carter hopped down her front steps with a huge grin. Her Shorkie, Nova, wagged her tail from the porch, not quite sure why her best friend was leaving again. But Carter was ready.

She had one big reason to smile: her kindergarten teacher moved up to teach first grade—so Carter gets to see a familiar face every morning. Not only that, but most of her old classmates are with her again, plus two new friends she’s excited to meet at lunch. She’s already planning to show them her favorite rainbow-colored pencils and maybe trade stickers if they’re cool.

“First grade is gonna be better than kindergarten,” she said proudly, bouncing slightly in her sneakers while waiting for the bus.

Your Morning Probably Looked a Lot Like This…

Meanwhile, across Gwinnett, moms and dads were racing clocks and zippers. Someone couldn’t find their left shoe. Someone else refused to eat breakfast unless it included chocolate chips.

One parent ran down the driveway in socks chasing the bus, waving a water bottle and yelling, “WAIT! He forgot his lunch!”

If your morning felt like a circus act, just know: you’re not alone. You’re in good company.

Gwinnett Schools: Strong Start, Bright Future

Gwinnett Schools
Dr. Al Taylor

Interim Superintendent Dr. Al Taylor says Gwinnett County Public Schools are off to a strong start this year, despite questions about federal funding.

“We’ve made solid decisions early,” he said. “So there won’t be any disruption to services. We’re ready.”

That means your kids—including Carter—are learning in classrooms with new tools, upgraded CTAE programs, and AI-powered learning enhancements. Yup, this year’s class might be learning reading, math, and a little artificial intelligence too.

Teachers and Bus Drivers—Fully Stocked

The district reports less than 20 teacher vacancies—a huge win for a school system of this size. That means kids get the consistency and care they deserve.

And the buses? Fully staffed. Gwinnett went all in on making sure drivers were hired and ready, which is why Carter’s bus showed up right on time, with her driver giving her a cheerful “Good morning!” as she climbed aboard.

Looking Ahead: Big Goals and Big Smiles

Later this year, the district plans to place an Education SPLOST extension on the November ballot to fund more improvements. But today? It’s about Nova’s bark from the porch, a perfectly packed pink backpack, and a little girl named Carter waving goodbye as she heads off to a brand-new adventure.

So here’s to the parents who remembered the lunch, and even more to the ones who forgot it and had to drive to school. Here’s to the teachers who smiled through the chaos and the bus drivers who know every stop by heart.

And here’s to Carter—showing up in her bright pink best, braids bouncing, ready to learn, laugh, and lead the way.

Welcome back, Gwinnett.
