Meet Superior Court Judge Candidate Tuwanda Rush Williams

Tuwanda Rush Williams recently joined the esteemed law firm of Thompson, O’Brien, Kappler & Nasuti as Of Counsel, marking a significant milestone in her illustrious career on June 5, 2023. Previously, she dedicated herself to public service as a Deputy County Attorney in Gwinnett County’s Department of Law.

Here, she not only supervised the work of Senior Assistant County Attorneys in both transactional and litigation matters but also played a pivotal role in supporting Gwinnett County Government officials, departments, and judicial entities. Tuwanda has been an integral part of the Georgia legal community since her admission to the bar in October 1992, bringing over three decades of extensive legal expertise to her roles. Her journey through law has been vast, covering more than twenty-five legal domains, with a deep focus on local government law, particularly in civil rights, constitutional litigation, and state law claims.

Before her impactful tenure with Gwinnett County, Tuwanda enhanced her skills at the City of Atlanta Law Department. She tackled complex legal challenges, including civil rights litigation under section 1983, employment litigation under Title VII, ADA, and ADEA, as well as handling numerous jury trials in state and federal courts, where she often emerged victorious. Her legal acumen also includes four years in private practice, dealing with a range of issues from personal injury litigation to family law.

Her leadership extended beyond the courtroom as she served as an officer of the Gwinnett County Bar Association, eventually becoming its President in June 2013, and notably, the first African American officer in the organization’s 60-plus year history. Tuwanda’s commitment to fostering diversity in the legal profession led her to co-found the Gwinnett Chapter of the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers in 2009. She remains actively involved in multiple legal and community groups, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to service and advocacy.

Tuwanda’s roots are in Rochester, New York. She pursued her academic passions, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Syracuse University followed by a Juris Doctor from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law. Since moving to Gwinnett County in December 2000, she has immersed herself in community service, contributing countless hours to organizations like Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the National Council of Negro Women, among others. Tuwanda is not only a respected lawyer but also a cherished community leader, recognized multiple times for her trailblazing contributions to law and community service.

Alongside her professional and community engagements, Tuwanda is a devoted family woman, married to Dr. Anthony Williams, with whom she shares two adult children and a cherished daughter-in-law. She is a beacon of inspiration, demonstrating the profound impact one individual can have on their community and the legal profession.
