The Georgia job market continues to show resilience in 2025, with unemployment holding steady at 3.6% in March—six-tenths of a point lower than the national average. The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) announced the addition of 6,900 new jobs last month, pushing the state’s total job count to an impressive 4,979,500.
Georgia Holding the Line on Unemployment
Despite slight dips in employment numbers and labor force participation, Georgia’s unemployment rate remains unchanged from February and continues to outperform national figures.
“Georgia’s job market is full of opportunity, with nearly 5 million jobs and three openings for every Georgian,” said Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes. “I’m committed to working alongside the governor, lawmakers, and job creators across the state to connect talent with opportunity and ensure Georgia remains the No. 1 state for business.”
Industries Fueling Growth in Georgia
Some sectors are clearly pulling more weight than others. In March alone, the following industries added the most jobs:
- Health Care & Social Assistance: +3,100
- Information (Tech & Media): +2,400
- Administrative & Support Services: +1,300
- Management of Companies: +1,100
- Durable Goods Manufacturing: +800
Over the past year, health care has been the MVP of Georgia’s labor market, contributing a staggering 22,500 new jobs. The government sector also posted solid growth, with local, state, and federal entities together adding nearly 12,000 jobs.
However, not all sectors had a winning month. Industries experiencing job losses in March include:
- Transportation & Warehousing: -3,200
- Accommodation & Food Services: -1,100
- Professional Services: -400
- Finance & Insurance: -300
- Arts & Entertainment: -200
And over the past 12 months, some industries like retail trade, hospitality, and manufacturing have shed jobs, showing the need for strategic reinvestment and innovation.
What’s Next? High-Growth Industries to Watch in Georgia
To maintain momentum and increase employment opportunities across the state, Georgia can focus on investing in sectors with high growth potential:
- 💻 Technology & AI: With growing investments in AI and cybersecurity, Georgia can become a hub for digital innovation.
- 🏗️ Clean Energy & Sustainability: As climate initiatives grow, there’s massive job potential in solar, electric vehicle infrastructure, and smart grid tech.
- 🧬 Life Sciences & Biotech: Georgia’s expanding health care ecosystem pairs well with research and pharmaceutical jobs.
- 🧑🏫 Education Technology: With hybrid learning and workforce development booming, EdTech can bring jobs in design, content, and delivery systems.

- 🏘️ Construction & Affordable Housing Development: With a growing population, there’s demand for skilled labor and housing innovation.
A Note on the Numbers
Despite job gains, the labor force decreased slightly over the month and year. Employment fell by 6,654 in March, while the number of unemployed rose marginally to 192,143—still a relatively stable figure considering national trends.
Initial unemployment claims dropped by over 1,100 since February, indicating that layoffs are not widespread, though the claims are still up year-over-year by 1,449.
