Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is considering implementing a policy that would require all students from kindergarten through 12th grade to use clear backpacks. This proposal is part of several measures the district is exploring to enhance student safety on campus.
As part of the plan, GCPS would provide each student with one clear backpack for the remainder of the 2024-25 school year. Parents would also have the option to purchase clear backpacks that meet specific requirements set by the district.
Students would be permitted to carry a small, non-clear pouch for personal items, with a maximum size of 6 by 9 inches. Non-transparent bags would also be allowed for activities such as band or athletics.
For the current school year, the mandatory clear backpack policy would not apply to staff and visitors. School officials noted on the GCPS website: “If we implement a new policy, it will not begin until later this school year. If we continue the policy beyond this school year, families will need to purchase clear backpacks for their students.”
Other school districts, including Clayton County and Rockdale County, have already adopted mandatory clear backpack policies.
