Duluth, GA – The Duluth Police Department is celebrating two important milestones: the retirement of a highly respected officer and the addition of a new one. Captain Pete Bava, Badge #1056, is officially retiring after 45 years of dedicated service, while Officer Guelmy Santiago has been sworn in as the newest member of the department.

Today marks the final 10-42 for Captain Pete Bava, who served with exceptional courage and leadership both in New York and Duluth. After an impressive 45-year career in law enforcement, Captain Bava is stepping down, leaving behind a legacy of sacrifice, commitment, and community protection. His service will be remembered for years to come.

“Thank you, Captain Bava, for a lifetime of dedication to keeping our communities safe. We wish you the very best in your well-deserved retirement,” the Duluth Police Department shared on social media.

Welcoming Officer Guelmy Santiago

The department also welcomed Officer Guelmy Santiago to its ranks. Officer Santiago, who brings prior law enforcement experience from New Jersey, was officially sworn in by Judge Barrett during a ceremony attended by his family, colleagues, and Chief Carruth. Officer Santiago’s experience and dedication make him a valuable addition to the Duluth Police Department.

“We are thrilled to have Officer Santiago on board and are confident he will serve our community with integrity and commitment,” Chief Carruth remarked at the ceremony.

Duluth Police Officer Salary and Benefits Overview

The Duluth Police Department offers competitive compensation and benefits for new recruits and experienced officers. Below is a summary of what officers can expect:

Salary and Bonuses:

  • Starting Salary: $61,020 based on a 42-hour work schedule
  • Language Skills Bonus: Up to 5% for proficiency in a desirable language
  • Sign-On Bonus:
    • Non-Certified Officers: $1,500 (half paid upon completing field training, half after one year)
    • Certified Officers: $3,000 (half paid upon completing field training, half after one year)
  • Promotion Opportunities: After one year, officers may be eligible for promotion to Master Police Officer with a 5% raise, subject to job performance and a written exam

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary and housing stipend of $650 per month
  • Take-home patrol vehicle and all necessary equipment provided
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision plans for officers and eligible family members, with contributions from the city
  • 12-hour rotating shifts with every other weekend off

Retirement Plans:

  • 457b/457 Roth employee contributions with a 401a city match of up to 2%, vested after 5 years
  • Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) Retirement, fully funded by the city with vesting at 5 years
  • POAB Retirement with all membership fees paid by the city
