Jaylen Bell, a standout senior from Grayson High School, is preparing to leave for Indiana next month to join the Hoosiers. Jaylen, a key player in Grayson’s state championship win, capped off his high school career with a stellar performance in the Class 6A title game. The Rams defeated Carrollton 38-24, showcasing a dominant defense that neutralized GPB’s Offensive Player of the Year, Julian “JuJu” Lewis.

This victory continues a proud family tradition of football excellence. Jaylen’s father, Coach Marion Bell, has an impressive coaching resume, including leading the East Orange Jaguars to a championship in the early 2000s after a 40-year drought. Currently, he coaches at Southwest DeKalb. Jaylen’s older brother, Coach Tre’ Bell, was on the sidelines during the championship game and now coaches at UMass, adding another layer of football expertise to the family.

Defensive Battle Highlights Championship Win

In the highly anticipated matchup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Grayson’s defense, led by linebacker Tyler Atkinson, outshined Carrollton’s high-powered offense. Atkinson delivered a game-changing performance with eight tackles, two sacks, and three tackles for loss. Defensive back Vaughn Mitchom added two critical interceptions, sealing the game in Grayson’s favor. The Rams’ defense also racked up five sacks, 12 disruptive plays, and held Carrollton to just 43 rushing yards.

Carrollton quarterback Julian Lewis, a 5-star recruit heading to Colorado, threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns but struggled against Grayson’s relentless defense, which forced two interceptions and limited his big-play potential.

Offensive Firepower Secures the Win

Grayson’s offense complemented its defensive dominance with a balanced attack. Quarterback Travis Burgess threw for 183 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 58 yards. Running back Elijah Miller was unstoppable, racking up 109 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Ashton Turner and Joel Bradford also contributed critical runs, helping the Rams outpace Carrollton in the second half.

After a 17-17 tie at halftime, Grayson took control in the final quarters. Miller’s two touchdowns late in the game put the Rams ahead for good, while Mitchom’s second interception slammed the door on any hopes of a Carrollton comeback.

A Season to Remember

This state championship win marked Grayson’s fourth in school history. Second-year head coach Santavious Bryant joined the elite ranks of Grayson coaches who have won titles, including Mickey Conn, Jeff Herron, and Adam Carter. The Rams rebounded from a season-opening loss to Collins Hill to win 14 straight games and finish with a 14-1 record.

As Jaylen Bell prepares to take his talents to Indiana, he leaves behind a legacy of hard work, leadership, and success. His family’s coaching heritage and Grayson’s championship tradition have set the stage for him to make a significant impact at the college level.
